Greenovia aurea, often called the Mountain Rose, is a rare succulent admired for its striking resemblance to a rose flower. Its tightly layered leaves form a perfect rosette that looks almost identical to a blooming rosebud, staying small and compact, usually only a few inches across. The leaves are a soft green color that can take on shades of pink or red along the edges when exposed to bright light or cooler temperatures, making the rosette look even more like a living flower. Native to the Canary Islands, this plant naturally grows on rocky mountain slopes, which explains both its resilience and its name.
In cultivation, Greenovia aurea requires plenty of bright, indirect light and thrives in a very well draining soil mix, where excess moisture wonโt linger around the roots. It prefers mild temperatures and cannot tolerate frost, making it ideal for protected outdoor spots in warm climates or indoor growing near a sunny window. Like many Canary Island succulents, it follows a seasonal rhythm. During hot summer months it may enter dormancy, with the rosettes closing tightly to conserve water, then reopen and grow actively once cooler weather returns.
